Discussion Forum

In this topic, we show an example of a Spark Discussion: a way students can discuss and collaborate on a central question or theme, using a forum.

For the example below, these fictional students discuss a theme of “the benefits of online study”, and feed back on the discussion forum when it suits them.

You can see that there are many reasons why a student may choose to study online rather than in a traditional campus setting. For example, they may need a different way to study to fit around their work, life or personal commitments, or because of a disability or health condition.

Discussions are an important way to learn and get to know your fellow students.

These discussion activities are an opportunity to connect, share your knowledge with and gain a broader insight into the experiences of the other students on your course.

Hi! I'm not the biggest fan of being put on the spot to answer things - just reminds me of being in secondary school. Online learning gives me more time for reflection so I can give a more considered, professional response to questions, prompts, etc. I sound how I want to sound! Reading all your other comments... I'm definitely not working into the night! I like to catch up on stuff early when my brain is fresh. Plus I like studying in a comfortable and familiar environment. On campus in lecture theatres or in the library isn't for me!

I like feeling like part of a global creative community - I'm here in my little corner of the UK but I can collaborate with people from all over the world and get inspiration from their art practices. Viewing things from different cultural perspectives helps to shape my own work for the better I think. Also, online study works better for me, I'm an oddball... I work better at night!

Hi everyone!

For me, online learning works because I can balance my priorities. I have a two year old daughter... on campus and relocating wasn't an option! The days she is at nursery give me time to study. Sometimes I'll use the time after she's gone to bed but I don't always have the mental energy in the evenings...
